We visited the Cuban musician Kelvis Ochoa in Madrid in 2005. A year later we met El Mago, another Cuban musician, in Athens. We discovered they were childhood friends and wanted to bring them together to play in our Bar Candela project.
Because of their immigrant situation, they had not been in contact for a long time. As some necessary papers to travel were lacking, we organized a meeting between them on the Internet.

En el 2005 nosotros visitamos a Kelvis Ochoa, un músico cubano que vive en Madrid . Un ano mas tarde, conocimos al Mago, otro músico cubano que vive en Atenas. Descubrimos que eran amigos desde la niñez y que no estaban en contacto por mucho tiempo, hubiéramos querido traerlos a tocar juntos en nuestro proyecto Bar Candela.
Pero sus estatus de inmigrante, no lo permitió. Carecían de algunos papeles necesarios para viajar, y decidimos organizar una conferencia vía Internet.

BAR CANDELA Y LOS DOS LADOS

“Bar Candela y los dos lados” (Bar Candela and the two sides)
is inspired by Cuban bars and popular culture as well as the difficult political and economical situation on the island. The word “candela” means candle or light, but is also used as an exclamation to enforce whatever situation you are talking about, good or bad. CANDELA!
Our main inspiration for Bar Candela is Bar Silvia in Cayo Hueso, Havana. It is shaped like a triangle, and opens to the streets on two sides. The regular clients are slightly marked by ”la lucha” –the fight to keep up existence. Victor the barman serves cheap rum and provides the necessary framework of this social institution.
We will enter Café Sting, a bar and café that has an important social and cultural identity in a local community in Norway and bring in some of the Cuban experience. This is also a platform to investigate some other phenomena connected to Cuba.
Numerous Cubans have left their island since the revolution in 1959. It is difficult to find reliable statistics, but the presence of Cubans throughout the world is evident, as well as the stories of absent relatives and split families you can hear on the island.” Bar Candela y los dos lados” investigates and presents some of this division between the island and the outside: from the conflict between national Cuban television and Miami based exile media to the live Internet conference of two musicians living respectively in Madrid and Athens. They were childhood friends, but now have not met for 15 years.
The bar in Cuba is -as elsewhere- an important arena of communication and exchange of news and information. Rumors, jokes and slander comments on the often quite tense situation of managing daily life and an uncertain future.
Since Internet is not generally available to the pubic and the other media channels like the government controls newspapers, radio and television, the bar might be the only “communication tool” available to many customers. Erratic infrastructure is a general problem. Electricity blackouts are common. Tools for communication such as computers and mobile phones are hard to come by.
The bar is of course also a place for music, dance and fun. Cuban popular music has been exported globally and is a vital part of tourism. Music is a way of expression that is central to Cubans and can be heard in improvised street parties in the streets as well as in bars and clubs.
Our collaboration as productframes.org is the result of a dialogue through three years, it is also the result of technology. To stay in contact between Norway and Cuba has sometimes been a challenge, to record, store and transport some of our material have met many difficulties. Our artistic method could be described as collecting and moving information and material from one context to another. Cuban daily life and the situation of immigrants in Europe have been obvious fields of interest to us. We often expand our partnership collaboration to work with other people in different ways. For this edition of Bar Candela, we will especially like to mention the help and collaboration of Roberta Butti in Italy, El Mago in Athens, Max Delgado and Kelvis Ochoa in Madrid.

El bar Silvia, o el cuchillo de vapor





Sus orígenes los desconozco, pero se cuenta que una señora llamada Silvia y que tenia su pequeña habitación en la parte trasera del bar., era la dueña, comentan que marcho a los estados unidos al principio de la revolución, cuando el estado comenzó a nacionalizar las empresas privadas.
El bar. Silvia o el cuchillo de vapor esta situado en la barriada de Cayo Hueso, entre dos calles que se unen en forma de cuchillo, de ahí el sobrenombre, las calles que conforman esa esquina se nombran Vapor y Príncipe.
Cerca de ahí se encuentra una emisora de radio muy popular, por donde han pasado centenares de agrupaciones musicales cubanas, y donde se rinde culto a la música popular cubana, muchos locutores, escritores , trabajadores en general de Radio Progreso han dejado sus huellas en los micrófonos y buroes de ese lugar, como también en las botellas recortadas en forma de vasos que se ingenian las barman para abastecer a los curdas cotidianos del barrio, y a los artistas de la radio que pasan por el bar , entre pausas de grabaciones y recesos de programación .
Tiene un extraño y curioso diseño, su forma y su posición, invita a cineastas a usarlo como set de filmaciones para películas cubanas y foráneas. Como ejemplo tenemos Clandestino de Fernando Pérez .
Si te sientas en el bar y miras desde la misma punta del cuchillo, observaras una pequeña plaza o agro mercado donde los clientes se entrelazan con los automóviles que pasan por la calle San Lázaro. fruteras ,carniceros, y diferentes vendedores , también pasan sus ratos en el bar, un doble compadre, y a seguir en la lucha caballeros.

Cuando te bajes del avión y recojas tus maletas, sigue la cola de gentes que están saliendo por una puerta corrediza de cristal que se abre automáticamente sales a un salón grande de aproximadamente 200 metros OK? Te diriges a mano derecha hasta el final del pasillo, vas a ver unas ventanillas situadas a un costado haces una pequeña cola si es que hay, pides un tique para el Nathional Theatre en el tren expreso o rápido ( faster ) que cuesta ciento setenta y pico koronas Noruegas ahora no recuerdo bien.
OK ya tienes el tique. Después de las taquillas donde lo compraste vas a ver una barrera parecidas a la de los metros introduces el tique por una ranura a la mano derecha de esa barrera (gate) y esperas a que se abra ,hasta ahí todo OK? siempre hay una persona en esa entrada que te ayuda si te trabas sin líos. Al pasar y siguiendo a la derecha veras dos elevadores te montas y accionas el botón que dice U hasta el próximo piso de abajo nada mas que es un piso no te preocupes, continuas caminando bordeando el anden y te encontraras un tren de color gris ahí parado ,fíjate ahora!!! en la puerta del tren tiene unas letras digital, uno dice Oslo S y el otro dice Asker, debes coger el segundo (Asker ) debes fijarte bien porque los trenes son iguales, si se va en lo que estas saliendo del elevador no te preocupes que pasan cada diez minutos, si no te fijas en la pizarra que esta colgando del techo en el mismo anden. OK?.
ya en el tren vacilas el paisaje que es realmente lindo, son tres paradas, son largas entra una y otras pero si tienes dudas verifica con un plano que hay arriba de la puerta y busca la parada correcta
National Theatre) es en la que te espero la primera se llama Lillestrand, la segunda es Oslo Sentro y como a los dos minutos la tercera National Theatre al bajarte, y ya en el anden me veras
trae un abrigo que acá la temperatura siempre te sorprende ( no muy gordo porque estamos en verano) otra cosa tráeme dos botellita de vino de la Perla eso esta subiendo por Ramblas desde barceloneta a mano izquierda en una calle estrecha que no me acuerdo como se llama pero se que hay una pequeña iglesia en la esquina de Ramblas y esa callecita, caminas dos o tres cuadras adentro y te encuentras ese pequeña taberna donde trabaja un señor llamado Paco que creo que es el dueño, ahí tienen un vinito tinto barato (4e ) y bueno.
